Tiling
Waterproofing
Grouting
I have been told to use a flexible `rubber based` adhesive on my floor. What does this mean?
Rubber is used in some adhesives as a filler.
The little black flecks in the body of the powder is the rubber.
Rubber has actually less to do with flexibility than other additives (polymers), so be careful not to confuse the flexibility of a product with the amount of rubber used.
Some flexible products don’t even contain any rubber at all!!
The “S” code in the AS4992 classification (link) will tell you more about flexibility than the appearance of the adhesive.
(S1 = flexible, S2 = very flexible)
S1 means you can use it on fibre cement sheet, S2 means it is flexible enough to go onto timber.
Remember also that you may not need a flexible adhesive (such as when tiling onto concrete).
