What are expansion and isolation joints and do I really need them?
The tiling standard calls for expansion and isolation joints to make sure the tiles can cope with small changes or stresses in the surface. They are needed even when flexible adhesives are used. You need to make sure that the tiles don`t butt directly against the wall (there needs to be a small space along the entire edge) and that any joints or joins in the underlying surface are carried through the face of the tiles. Large spans also need joints installed to relieve pressure and prevent tilescracking, becoming “drummy” or popping off.
