Tiling Waterproofing Grouting
  • I have been told that I have to render my brick wall before tiling. This is an additional cost I didn`t expect, is it really necessary?

It is recommended that you bag or render before tiling brick or block walls.
This is because the mortar and bricks can absorb at different rates.
This can lead to different drying and possible shrinkage in the adhesive bed.
The effect is increased when mortar joins are recessed.
Think about what render looks like when it dries, the outline of the bricks can be seen.  This can lead to problems with a thin adhesive layer.
Remember also that the surface needs to be flat so that the tiles will sit right.  It is unlikely that the bricks will produce a suitable level surface for tiling.
So rendering will reduce the chances of potential problems and is recommended for tiling over bricks or blocks.
